After reading this, I naturally asked myself, "Am I responsible?" I began to wonder if responsibility is a destination or if it's an active process. Can anyone ever reach a point where they can say "I am now able to say that I am a responsible person"? Or is it more realistic to ask "Am I making a standard of responsibility a way of life?" I thoroughly enjoyed the reflection that this blog inspired.

Any chance of expanding on how diametrically opposed figures as Miles and Coltrane managed it? (particularly Miles, given his eccentricities, and ostensible retirements, perceived sell outs, etc) I would like to hear more

There is always a level of compromise. We don't live in a vacuum. Is it not said, "On earth as it is in heaven". Yikes, something to ponder.

Peace .................. Malik Alkabir

Trane's commitment changed the playing field, the right man at the right time. Times change (and how), but now, as then, the challenge is to find the canvas to apply our available commitment to do our part in leading us all forward through this new non-linear landscape. Our unique selves determine our potential commitment, and if we choose to cultivate and channel that commitment, rather than ignore or stymie it, we will live a good life. Easier said then done, but you taught me to know the instinctual truth, and act accordingly. Bumping into a few walls as we go is how we learn the path. The greatest men and women face the greatest challenges (ask Trane). All there is is to move on. Onward and upward (and yes, outward).

So, jazz is dead, rock is dead, the funk is dead, but the music lives on.
